Matt got his start in water polo at the age of 10 playing with the Coquitlam Lions program and played his first season with Pacific Storm in 2001. During his time with the club, some of his best memories include winning U18 Nationals in 2005 and being selected for the all-star team at that tournament, and being selected as U18 team captain for the 2005-2006 season. After graduating high school Matt moved to Calgary to train at the men’s national training centre. Internationally, Matt has represented Canada in several major junior tournaments including the 2005 U20 World Championships in Argentina, 2006 U20 Pan Am Games in Montreal, and the 2007 U20 World Championships in Los Angles.
Outside of playing, Matt also remains involved in the water polo community as both a referee and a coach. Recently, Matt has refereed at the 2010 U16 Boy’s Nationals and the 2011 U18 Boy’s Nationals, having refereed the gold medal games at both tournaments. He has also been involved as a volunteer, assistant and head coach for various teams for a number of years. Most recently he has served as the head coach of the Calgary Torpedoes U14 Boy’s program and as the assistant coach of the U18 Alberta Boy’s Provincial team.
Outside of water polo, Matt has spent the last 5 years at the University of Calgary completing his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Biomedical Engineering. Having recently graduated and moved back home to Coquitlam, Matt is excited to rejoin the Pacific Storm program. His main goal is to help the current generation of Storm players to develop fundamental skills while also developing a lifelong love for the game.
